Polysaccharide or Pectin for short is a soluble fiber most often found in fruits. Its most popular use is as a thickener in baking and cooking although it may have some medicinal properties. It can be used in capsule form to lower cholesterol, relieve constipation, improve blood sugar and lower triglyceride levels. Pectin adds bulk to the stool and binds substances in the intestines. Under diseased conditions as well as healthy conditions Pectin may be able to increase the integrity of the gastrointestinal mucus layer.
